Try removing the throttle body and cleaning the inside around the butterfly all old car have this issue after years of use there is a build up of oil and crap in there and can make the butterfly stick and this could be the same problem in you're case. On the mod side of things you could get a panel filter for you airbox (stay away from k&n vauxhall don't like them) and set of Denso Iridium Spark Plugs you will have to make sure you get the right set for you're motor, phone regal shop if in doubt! You should feel a shape response as soon as you put you're foot down and may get about 10+ bhp from it, Also weight is a big killer to any car try removing you're spare wheel these are the cheap cheap mod that can be done and should be done first. After this point you have to spend big money on exhaust systems and engine mods.

Hope that helps buddy

Also I have only just notied that you said you messed about with you're distributor unless you know what you're doing I would advise to resetting as you many have made you're car worse.
Always do you're homework first before you change anything on you're car as it may end up being an expensive mistake, there is loads of information out there where people have already tried parts out and have reported there results online so try and find them. Try out www.migweb.co.uk they are the biggest vauxhall enthusiast in UK and Ireland and if a mod has been done to a vauxhall it'll be in there.

Yea de-catting will make a very noticeable difference as this lets the gas's exit more freely and reduce the pressure on the engine.
Two problems with this mod is:

1 - you may not pass you're M.O.T so hold on to you're old cat.
2 - In many cars removing you're cat can effect the ecu as it has a carbon dioxide sensor just after you're cat. What happens here is that the ecu receives a higher result of CO2 than what it has been programmed to and it has to compensate by reducing the fuel and increasing the O2 to balance it of and the result of this is less power.

If you remap the ecu this will fix this problem but you will need to let the tuner know so that he can change the map for the de-cat.
